DECKING MAINTENANCE

TIMBER DECKING

Maintaining timber decking is essential to keep it in good condition and increase its lifespan. Here are some tips for maintaining timber decking:

1. Regular Cleaning: Sweep or hose down the deck regularly to remove dirt, debris, and leaves. Use a deck cleaner and scrub brush to clean the deck thoroughly at least twice a year.

2. Apply Sealant: Apply a waterproof sealant to the deck every year to protect it from moisture damage, sun damage, and fading. We recommend oiling the deck as staining adds colour on top of the natural timber colour and does not wear evenly. The brand of decking oil we like to use is Intergrain UltraDeck Decking Oil in the colour Natural. Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully.

3. Prevent Moisture: Keep the deck dry by fixing any leaks or drainage issues, removing any standing water, and ensuring adequate ventilation.

4. Prevent Stains: Avoid leaving any stains on the deck, including food and beverage spills, by cleaning them up immediately with a mild detergent and water.

5. Sand and Refinish: Sand and refinish the deck every 2-3 years to remove any rough spots, splinters, or signs of wear and tear. Use a suitable deck stain or oil to protect the deck.

6. Trim Surrounding Foliage: Trim any overhanging branches, vines, or other foliage around the deck to prevent them from scratching the surface or trapping moisture.

7. Use Mats and Furniture Pads: Place mats under planters and furniture legs to prevent scratches, scuffs, and dents on the deck.

COMPOSITE DECKING

Composite decking is a low-maintenance option compared to traditional timber decking. However, it still requires some maintenance to keep it looking good and performing well. Here are some tips for maintaining composite decking:

1. Regular Cleaning: Sweep or hose down the deck regularly to remove dirt, debris, and leaves. Use a soft-bristled brush and a mild soap solution to clean any stubborn stains or spots. TimberTech has a fantastic cleaner available that is specifically formulated for composite decking. 

2. Avoid High Pressure Cleaning: Avoid using high-pressure washing or power washing as depending on the board used it may damage the deck surface. Check the guidelines of the relevant composite decking brand used to see if they advise against using high-pressure cleaners on their boards.
